Just joking.

Who are these social media experts? They’re like self-proclaimed pen and paper experts. All because you have a stellar space pen, does not mean you will write the next American novel. Corporate America and these social media hacks confuse the tools for the content. I demonstrate this confusion by showing how George Lucas got it all wrong and how James Cameron did it right. I explore why this stuff is not rocket science, anyone now has all the tools they need, and finally a general advocacy towards defriending, unfollowing, and unsubscribing bad stuff on the internets

Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine in a magazine interview, described how he became a prolific guitarist. At Harvard, between and after and before classes, practiced guitar. At a minimum, he practiced for eight hours a day. With no musical background, except for the dusting of high school choir, he got good by practicing so much.

Outliers by Maxwell Gladwell suggest talent is simply practcing way more than anyone else. But it’s not an math equation where you practice a 10,000 hours and become exceptional. Rather you practice 10,000 hours of whatever because you love it. You love it so much that the boring parts are part of the love. Your passion drives you to do stuff people find boring, fustrating, or indifferent about.

Tom Morrella got good because he love practicing guitar. This is not a behavioral in understanding passion or drive. It’s about an overwhelming impusle to seek and do stuff that would turn-off most people.

This brings my next point: passion is found in the procrasination in your life. One of my friends asked what do I do when I am not working. The immediate answer is you don’t know. You figure what you do, everyone does. But what I do between work is something I’ve been doing since I was a kid. I play with computers, software, innovative technologies, and read everything Tech. Love it. I can’t stop absorbing everything tech.

And there it is. That’s how you know what you’re passionate about. It is the same story with everyone successful person. They do something they don’t like doing to pay the bills, but after hours, goof-off on something they enjoy. Guess what? That goofing off has merit and money-potential. Stephen King in his book, On Writing, describes before becoming an established writer, he worked a janitor in his local high school, taught English, or work in a factory. But when he got home, you couldn’t take him away from writing.

This thinking comes from a youtube vidoe by Gary Vaynerchuk at Web 2.0 Expo in New York 2008. Check it and clap it up:

He is right. Get off the stuff you hate doing and do something you love. Because that love is going to bring in a payday. It’s going to be tomorrow or next year. But there is a payday. Do it now during the Great Recession because when people do have money again, they will make it rain for you. And scoops and scoops of Haagan Daz too!

Defriending people is a big deal on Facebook. But sometimes you got to purge folks who are on the peripheral, not on the radar, or inactive in your life. It’s okay. In fact, it’s empowering.
